Luke 9:23 Interactive Learning Activities

Materials:

sweet treat
phone timer
napkins
construction paper
paper plates

Challenge 1

Luke 9:23 Challenge Part 1:

DENY YOURSELF:

This challenge incorporates the theme of the 1st part of the verse, emphasizing self control.

Pass out napkins with a sweet treat on them.
Set a timer for 2-5 minutes and tell the kids that they cannot eat the treat.
Tell them you will take it away if they touch it.
During the time that you are waiting, tell the kids to fold their hands if they feel tempted. Connect this to prayer and how we should do this in the real world when we are faced with temptations. For a bonus, you can talk about the petition of the Lords prayers where we ask God "to lead us not into temptation."

Challenge 2

Instructions:

Step 1:

Cut a piece of brown construction paper into 1/2 inch strips.

Step 2:

Separate the strips into two piles.

Step 3:

Cut one pile of strips into halves and the other into thirds.

Step 4:

Write the name of each child on one strip from each pile. Once you have finished mix all the strips up.

Step 5:

Challenge the kids to look for their two strips and glue their crosses together. Walk around the room and tell them to follow you when you finish. I did an obstacle course type thing with the chairs and tables to get them moving around before the craft. After returning to their seats, go over the verse again and discuss what it means to take up our crosses and follow Jesus.

Plate Craft

Instructions:

Step 1:

Out line a cross onto a paper plate and mark where you want the holes to be.

Step 2:

Cut out the outlined cross. You have to stab the scissors through to cut the inside so you can cut inside the lines.

Step 3:

The next step is to hole punch each of these holes. Personally I only had a 3-hole puncher so I had to make the holes this alternative way. If you need, you can also follow this method. First I used a corn skewer to poke small holes into the plate. I know it is strange, but it got the job done haha.

Step 4:

To make to holes bigger I poked a pencil through the holes. You could also use a small knitting needle or crochet hook if you have one.

Step 5:

Next, cut 7 feet of yarn.

Step 6:

Roll a small piece of tape onto the bottom of your yarn. It should look something like the end of a shoelace.

Step 7:

Quadruple knot the other end of your yarn.

Step 8:

Lace the yarn through the holes using the shoelace end and pull tight. YOu can either tie it off after youve finished your design or leave it to redo another time. Taking it a step further, you could also color the plate and add your favorite verses like my class did.
